These water-based varnishe create a crackle effect on acrylic paint or any water-based paint. It is colour less and your result will be totally transparent. The varnish in 2 steps makes it possible to obtain thiner and delicate cracks.
The two-stages crackle varnish can be used on polymer clay to give it an aged appearance. Then give a patina with ink, acrylic paint or wax to reinforce this aspect.
You can use this effect to create beautiful pearls, cabochons, pendants, to customize your decorative objects or creations. Use a metallic paint to get gold, silver or bronze cracks! This will have a foil effect! On a dark background, you can better appreciate the result. Change the effect by using a dark colour on a light background, this will give an old appearance to the varnished surface.
To vary the effects, change the application methods of paints and varnishes cracking (thin and thick layers, direction of the application). If you apply thin layers, the cracks will be smaller. The thicker the layers, the more important the cracks will be. With the two-steps varnish, vary the two layers of layers to obtain various effects.
For these products, you can choose a brush or sponge application. The rendering of the cracks will vary according to your choice of application: instrument, direction of application, thickness of the layers. Start by testing the application and rendering on a "rough" surface.
Attention, apply the varnish only once in places. Do not iron several times at the same place as the effect may be affected.
On polymer clay : apply component 1. The color of the clay will be the color you'll see in the cracks.
On other supports : If you want a background of colour to your cracks, paint your support with an acrylic paint. Or you can leave it as it is. Once the paint is dry, you can apply a layer of component 1. As soon as it looks dry, use a second colour of contrasting acrylic paint. You will see the cracks appear after a few minutes.
If you wish to, you can apply a protective varnish on the whole so that the second layer of acrylic is not damaged.
On polymer clay : As soon as the step 1 is dry to the touch, apply a paint that contrasts with the support. Do not wait too long between applications, the reaction will not be as strong if you let rest for example 24h. Once again, wait until it dries to affix step 2 varnish. After 30 minutes, you will notice that the layer of paint cracks and reveals the background colour.
On other supports : As soon as this step 1 is dry to the touch, apply a second paint that contrasts with the first. Do not wait too long between applications, the reaction will not be as strong if you let rest for example 24h. Once again, wait until it dries to affix step two varnish. After 30 minutes, you will notice that the second layer of paint cracks and reveals the background colour.
You can also use this two-component varnish alone, without paint on all substrates including polymer clay. This will create an irregular and raised transparent layer that will look old. For even more relief, use Indian Ink or wax as a patina.
For these two products, it is possible to accelerate the drying without any risk of damaging the final result.
Once done, clean your tools with a degreaser such as alcohol, ethanol or methanol.
